Instagram is set to remove end-to-end encryption from its direct messages starting May 8, a move that will change how private conversations work on the platform and raise new questions about user privacy.

Parent company Meta confirmed the change through an update to its support documentation, stating that end-to-end encrypted messaging in Instagram DMs “will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.”

The decision effectively ends one of Instagram’s most significant privacy features less than three years after it was introduced.

What End-to-End Encryption Means

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) ensures that only the sender and the recipient can read the contents of a message. Even the platform provider cannot access the conversation while it is in transit or stored on servers.

Once the feature is removed, Instagram messages will no longer be protected by this level of security, meaning the platform could technically access message content for moderation, safety systems, or other internal processes.

Why Instagram Is Removing Encryption

Meta says the decision comes down to usage. According to the company, only a small number of Instagram users actually enabled encrypted chats in DMs.

Because of the low adoption rate, the company is choosing to discontinue the feature and focus encrypted messaging on its other apps.

Users who still want encrypted communication are being directed toward WhatsApp, which continues to support end-to-end encryption by default.

What Happens to Existing Encrypted Chats

Instagram says users who currently have encrypted conversations will receive instructions on how to download their messages and media before the feature is discontinued.

In some cases, users may also need to update the Instagram app before they can export or save their encrypted chat history.

After May 8, encrypted conversations will no longer function within Instagram.

Privacy Concerns and Regulatory Pressure

The move is already drawing criticism from privacy advocates who argue that removing encryption weakens user protection.

End-to-end encryption prevents third parties, including companies themselves, from accessing private messages. Removing it could allow platforms to scan conversations for harmful content or comply with government regulations aimed at detecting illegal activity.

Governments in several countries have increasingly pushed tech companies to allow better monitoring of online activity, particularly to combat scams, harassment, and child exploitation.

A Shift in Meta’s Messaging Strategy

Instagram first introduced encrypted messaging in 2023 as part of Meta’s broader effort to improve privacy across its apps.

However, the company’s messaging ecosystem remains fragmented. WhatsApp still offers default end-to-end encryption, and Facebook Messenger also supports encrypted chats, but Instagram is now moving away from the feature.

The change signals a shift in how Meta plans to balance privacy, moderation, and regulatory demands across its platforms.

What Instagram Users Should Know

Once the change takes effect:

  • Encrypted chats will stop working on Instagram
  • Messages in DMs will no longer be end-to-end encrypted
  • Users may need to download existing encrypted messages before May 8
  • WhatsApp remains Meta’s main encrypted messaging platform

For users who rely on Instagram DMs for sensitive conversations, the upcoming change could significantly alter how secure those communications feel.
