After years of criticism over its search functionality, Reddit is beginning to see tangible results from its investment in improving how users discover content on the platform.

The company reported a 30% year-on-year increase in weekly search users, signaling a major turnaround for a feature that was once widely considered one of its weakest points.

Speaking during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman highlighted search as a key factor behind both user growth and engagement.

“Search has shown strong performance across daily and weekly active users, as well as query volume,” Huffman said. “It’s becoming a meaningful driver of retention.”

From Weak Spot to Growth Engine

For years, Reddit users often relied on external tools or search engines to navigate discussions across the platform. That narrative appears to be shifting.

The company has spent the last few years refining its search capabilities, including the introduction of AI-powered tools such as Reddit Answers, which aim to deliver more relevant and contextual results directly within the app.

These efforts are now translating into measurable gains—not just in search usage, but in overall platform engagement.

AI and Commerce Begin to Converge

Reddit is also exploring monetization opportunities tied to search. Earlier this year, the company began testing product placements within AI-generated search results in the United States.

The move reflects Reddit’s growing influence in consumer decision-making. According to the company:

  • Around 40% of conversations on the platform have commercial intent
  • 84% of users report feeling more confident in purchasing decisions after researching on Reddit

This positions Reddit as a key player in the increasingly competitive space where search, AI, and e-commerce intersect.

Strong User Growth Across Markets

The improvements in search come alongside broader user growth.

Reddit reported:

  • 493 million weekly active users, up 23% year-on-year
  • 126 million daily active users, a 17% increase

In the United States, daily users rose 7% to 53.5 million, while international markets saw stronger momentum, with a 26% increase to 73.3 million daily users.

The company reiterated its long-term ambition to reach 1 billion daily users globally, including 100 million in the U.S. alone.

Beyond Search: Expanding Global Reach

In addition to search improvements, Reddit credited its machine translation feature, now supporting more than 30 languages, for helping expand its global audience.

The feature has enabled the platform to make its vast library of user-generated discussions more accessible to non-English-speaking users, contributing to recent growth trends.

Financial Performance Beats Expectations

Reddit also posted strong financial results for the quarter.

The company reported $663 million in revenue, surpassing analysts’ expectations of $609.8 million. Meanwhile, capital expenditures remained minimal at just $1 million, reflecting a relatively asset-light approach to scaling its operations.
